Our committee's review
A leading figure in biodynamic winemaking, Nicolas Joly is a true icon of the Loire Valley — now joined by his daughter Virginie, who continues the legacy with equal passion. At the top of their game and awarded one star by the Revue du Vin de France (one of France’s top wine publications), they craft exceptional white wines with remarkable depth and structure, built for serious ageing.
The legendary Coulée de Serrant is nothing short of a global icon — one of the world’s greatest white wines. Each new vintage is eagerly awaited by connoisseurs. Farmed biodynamically for over 45 years, the estate produces what might be the most complex and enigmatic white wine out there — a wine that only truly reveals its layers after several years in the cellar.
Beyond this mythical wine, the estate also makes an outstanding white Savennières from a distinct terroir of schist and quartz. This bottling — Les Vieux Clos — comes from massal selections planted around 20 years ago.
Made in tiny quantities, with yields far below what the appellation allows, and released strictly on allocation, this wine is a must-have. Every new vintage is an event — but there’s never enough to go around.
Just released, the 2023 Savennières Les Vieux Clos White shows a luminous pale gold hue with striking intensity. The nose reveals earthy, root-driven aromas—hallmarks of the cru—lifted by delicate notes of white fruit. On the palate, the wine is energetic and finely structured, shaped by the cool vintage, which lends it a youthful austerity. A bottle to keep cellared a while longer, and ideally paired with fine fish or subtly spiced cuisine.
